Belgian Gelato was founded by a father-daughter combination, Hugo Heule and Joany Heule-Missotten from Belgium. Both are professional chefs and entrepreneurs who been successful in the hotel and restaurant business in Europe. Following this success, they began looking for a new challenge and decided to follow their passion. This passion for gelato led them to Italy, the gelato-making capital of the world, where they learned the art of gelato.

Inspired by the Belgian Chocolates and Pralines, and unsatisfied with the industry standard recipes Hugo and Johanna began experimenting with their own personalized recipes. Their goal was to use these original recipes to produce homemade, innovative, natural gelato and sorbet blends from quality ingredients and to sell them in retail shop locations across the United States.

In spring 2011, the Heule and Heule-Missotten families moved from Belgium to open the doors of Belgian Gelato's first location in Charleston, South Carolina. From the first day, Belgian Gelato was a huge success and a favorite among locals and tourists for its fresh, creamy gelato. As the name reflects, Belgian Gelato is a specialty ice cream concept, that is dedicated to natural gelato, sorbet products and specialty coffees.
